George Lopez Visits Latino Achievers

#LatinoAchieversNeedGeorge - George Lopez that is! On June 25, 2014, George Lopez spoke to a group of YMCA Latino Achievers, FUTURO, and La Escalera students at John Overton High School. Lopez joined the students in response to their twitter campaign and youth-created YouTube video. After a six-day social media campaign, Lopez happily agreed to join a group of 60 student leaders in the auditorium at John Overton High School. Cesar Molina, the student creator of the YouTube video, shares his experience with us here.

"Alli viene el chingón"
By Cesar Molina
John Overton High School Class of 2014,
YMCA Latino Achievers Club Co-President 2013-2014
Seeing George Lopez step out of his SUV and walk my way was a major life moment for me. He said “it’s a pleasure to finally put a full body to the face that started this video”. He was referring to the YouTube video I made that launched our #LatinoAchieversneedGeorge campaign on Twitter. I was completely blown away.
Meeting my role model and a huge celebrity was shocking. Being asked to walk him to the stage and introduce him to my fellow YMCA Latino Achievers was even more amazing. I was lucky enough to have him hug me as I walked across the stage, and then he asked everyone to give me a round of applause for the video I had created - breathtaking! George shared his life story in a serious, but also funny way. It was so impactful to everybody in those seats. He showed his weaknesses and showed that his life hasn’t always been fun and games and the spotlight, helping us realize that he is also still a human being who has and does face struggles in life. One major point he proved was that to be someone great you have to go through some difficult things to get to the top. I believe that everyone received inspiration or even a blessing from the great George.
George Lopez coming to Nashville was not only significant for me and my fellow Latino Achievers. It was a huge moment for the Latin community here. Having the privilege of making the launch video and getting George hooked was a major blessing to me. He has always been a huge role model to me and I’ve always looked up to him for being a major Latin inspiration and leader.
During his visit, George Lopez started a new flame in me that tells me that I to can be someone great like he is. It doesn’t mean that it will be easy to get there, but I have set a goal for my life once again and it’s a goal I shall never give up on. I am looking forward to the great things God has in store for me in life, and I cannot thank George Lopez enough for his visit and the lives he touched.
Mil gracias Latino Achievers Y Mil gracias George Lopez!
